KAMDHENU — Indigenous Cow Conservation & Organic Farming

कामधेनु Kamdhenu translates to “The sacred cow of Vedic wisdom that sustains life”

Protecting indigenous breeds, renewing the soil.

Kamdhenu protects indigenous Indian cow breeds such as Sahiwal and Gir, and builds zero-waste ecosystems where bio-energy and organic farming strengthen rural life.

The philosophy, demystified

The mission Conservation, pedigree breeding and care of indigenous breeds such as Sahiwal, Gir and Tharparkar, with zero-waste bio-energy.

For a first-time visitor, the reverence for the cow in India can seem puzzling. At its heart it is gratitude: for an animal that has fed, fuelled and fertilised village life for millennia.

Kamdhenu turns that gratitude into conservation. Indigenous breeds like Sahiwal and Gir are well suited to local climates; protecting them preserves both biodiversity and livelihoods. In Vedic science the indigenous cow is an ecological anchor and a maternal caregiver: A2 milk, natural bio-fertiliser and clean energy.

The spiritual thread is the same as in every DJJS initiative: through Brahm Gyan (Direct Internal Awakening / Self-Realization), a seeker learns to see the Divine in every living being, and care follows naturally.

Curious about the root of it all? What is Brahm Gyan?

How it works

The three pillars of Kamdhenu

  1. Nandi & Gaushala

    Sanctuaries

Hygienic shelters with green fodder and veterinary oversight.

  2. Nasal Sudhar

    Pedigree Breed Conservation

Conserving and breeding pedigree indigenous breeds such as Sahiwal and Gir.

  3. Jaivik Urja

    Bio-Energy

Bio-gas power and vermicompost: nothing wasted, everything returned to the land.

Also part of the work

  • Organic farming Cow-based natural fertiliser for chemical-free fields.
  • Farmer training Sharing practical methods with rural communities.

Field impact

The work, as reported by DJJS

  • Thousands

of rescued and pedigreed indigenous cows sheltered in large-scale gaushalas

    As reported by DJJS

  • Breeding centres

recognised genetic conservation centres serving agricultural universities

    As reported by DJJS

  • Bio-gas

powering ashram kitchens, with bio-fertiliser for thousands of acres

Figures and descriptions are as reported by DJJS for its work in India and worldwide. djjs.us shares them as reported; they are not independent audits.

A story of transformation

Kamaljit Singh, Gaushala sewadar, Punjab

  1. Before

After attending Kamdhenu seminars, Kamaljit Singh converted a failing commercial dairy into a Sahiwal sanctuary.

  2. The turn

The herd’s health stabilised and veterinary costs dropped.

  3. After

Today the farm supplies A2 milk and compost to local schools.

The story in three movements

The loss → The circle

  1. 01 The loss

    Breeds and soils, both thinning

Hardy indigenous breeds have been crowded out, and chemical farming has left many soils tired and farmers in debt.

  2. 02 The wish-fulfilling cow

    An ancient symbol of generosity

In Indian tradition Kamdhenu is the cow who fulfils every wish: a symbol of how much a cared-for animal gives back to a community.

  3. 03 The circle

    Nothing wasted, everything returned

Indigenous herds are conserved; their by-products become bio-energy and natural fertiliser for organic fields, closing the loop.
